4 MONTH OLD BABY development guide

Now your baby has entered the fourth month of his life. With every passing month, your baby is becoming stronger, healthier, more active, and responsive to the world. Here are some changes that you feel in your baby when (s)he turns four months old


Here we are talking about 4-MONTH-OLD baby’s development:


When your baby turns four months old, (s)he is now able to see across the room. He is now ready to distinguish between colors. This is the best time to introduce your baby to new colorful toys and books. Now he can recognize you from a distance. Your baby could see your eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. He is now able to enjoy his surroundings. He can now recognize his sibling’s faces also. His eye muscles can also coordinate now.

But at this age, the baby still prefers to look at close images as compared to distances. Read books in front of him; he will enjoy watching colorful images. For the betterment of your baby’s vision, you can use night light and dim lamp in your baby’s room. You should also change the cot’s position and even the baby’s position in the coat. Keep the toys in your baby’s range, that is 8 inches. Talk to your baby as you walk in the room while doing some other work. But continuously involve your baby with yourself. Change the left and right side with each feeding.



Vaccination is vital as it gives your baby the strength to fight against diseases. As the baby is still weak, his immune system is not so developed, so vaccination is compulsory for the baby for his safe life. The fourth-month vaccination is DTaP, Hib, IPV, PCV, and RV.


Motor Skills:

Your baby is now becoming more active and doing more and more movements with their hands. Their both hands now can move together to grab a toy. Now they try to hold anything in their reach, including colorful toys, your hair, hands, etc. Now your baby has started to pick up all things and try to put in their mouth to taste things, so don’t leave any small objects near your baby so they could not grab and put it in their mouth. And now your baby’s head is more stable. 4th-month baby has good control over their heads. They can now lift their head. Now, they have their mood swings. And don’t try to impose things on your baby. Give them proper space.


Speech Development:

If you listen attentively to your baby’s talk, you may notice that they make vowel and alike sounds e.g., p and b sound when they are uncomfortable and unhappy. They make sounds, for example, j and k, when they are in a happy mood. Talk to them; they will try to copy you. If you say boo, they will try to say boo, back to you. Like when you are changing his diaper, tell him that now I am going to change your diaper or like I am going to feed you or now it’s time to change clothes, or it’s time to sleep. Talk to him about these sentences at daily bases. He will try to copy you


Rolling On:

Rolling over is now the favorite thing for babies. It’s not the same for all babies. May be baby roll on at the three or maybe some baby rolls on at 6th or 7th month. Weaning is a thrilling and developed stage that will start at the age of six months. In the fourth month, it is a good time to thinking about techniques by which you can use, and weaning may be possible and easy for your baby. You can also think about the food you want for your baby and introduce it first, or what technique you want to use; spoon led weaning or baby-led weaning.


How Mother Can Help in Baby’s Development at the Age of Four Months:

You can activate your baby’s sense of touch using a collection of stuff. You can try using velvet, fur, soft clothes, toweling, etc. so your baby can experience different touch. Never shake your baby this month. It can cause internal bleeding or can damage the brain. So never shake your baby. Deal with him very softly. Just consider your baby as a soft piece of cloth, handle them with proper care.

Always reply to your baby’s cry. If you will not respond, then it will make your baby very irritable and fussy. When your baby cries, try to soothe him. Please give them your touch. Massage is a good technique to give your baby mama’s touch. It is important for the baby’s strong bones. Using accurate techniques makes the massage very effective. First of all, you should choose a comfortable flat place covered with a blanket. Use a small amount of baby oil or vegetable oil for massage. Keep with yourself tissue or baby wipes to clean excess oil from the baby’s body.

A soft towel should be kept there to cover the baby’s body. Keep a soother if it is calming your baby. The room which you use for the massage purpose must have a dim light. If you play soft music it will also increase joy. Keep your baby gently on his stomach and turn his head on one side. Pour just two or three drops of oil on your hand and rub them. Starting with his head and coming towards the neck muscles, and then massage each shoulder of baby one by one. Then start with the baby’s back and move towards the baby hips with soft hands. Then massage the baby’s legs with your fingers and the same technique on the arms of the baby. Now turn your baby on his back and repeat all the processes with the same techniques.


Mommy’s Touch:

Mommy’s touch is most valuable for the baby. So, give your baby a lot of touches. This month, not only crying, sleeping, or feeding is the baby’s routine. Now he can give you expressions. This will increase a lot of love between mother and baby. So, the mother should give his baby a lot of touches.

Father must also give his touch to the baby. Massage is the way best technique to give your baby your touch. So do massage your baby before and after the bath. Also, cuddle with your baby. Kiss him. If your baby is not making any eye contact with you and does not pay attention to your face, it’s time to worry, call your baby doctor immediately, and if your baby is crossing his eye and not follow moving objects or if your baby is not making any sound or not giving response to the noise, and even If he does not lift his head, and he is not reaching the toys and can’t grab the toys. If the baby is not interested in what is going around her or if he is not babbling and does not move or use his hands and legs and all these signs are present in your baby, then consult your baby doctor soon.


Developmental Delay:

Some babies have delayed development. This delay may be for a short-term period or at permanent bases, but a permanent stoppage doesn’t occur often.

Immature birth and some illness are two main things that may cause short delays. Some defects can cause an everlasting delay. Baby’s development may also affect the environment in which they nurture. For example, if their parents have no good relationship with each other, or with baby and if they cannot get any love from their parents, it affects their growth. If parents take any drug or create any violence in the family, then they leave a very bad impact on the baby’s personality. It may stop the baby’s growth also.
