Mehmood: Over the years, actors from Mehmood to Shammi Kapoor and from Amitabh Bachchan to Imran Khan have donned kohl, lipstick and women's clothes to get sportingly into the drag act to generate laughs. While some look ghastly and will best try to forget their drag queen look, some actors such as Paintal and Aamir Khan and Shreyas Talpade have nailed the act time and again. And Riteish Deshmukh has, of course, made an art of it with his many appearances as a "woman" in his movies. Lets take a look at Bollywood's 20 best drag acts over the years.
In the 1965 film Bhoot Bangla, directed by and starring Mehmood, alongside Tanuja, the talented comedian puts on a wig and attends a job interview dressed up as a woman. The fluttering eyelashes and doll act was hilarious in its contrast to Mehmood's large frame and typical mannerisms.
Kishore Kumar: Kishore Kumar's drag act in 'Half Ticket' was brilliant. The funnyman of 60s cinema wore costume jewellery, a flowing skirt and wood Pran in the song 'Aake Seedhi Lagi..'
Kamal Hasan: Kamal Hasan dressed up as a middle-aged nanny in the film 'Chachi 420' that also featured Tabu as his disgruntled wife. Hasan's role was an Indian remake of the hit 'Mrs Doubtfire.' Hasan's makeup was realistic and the talented actor brought the role of the kindhearted disciplinarian to life.
Paintal: 'Rafoo Chakkar', the 1975 hit film inspired by 'Some Like It Hot' was one of Bollywood's earliest movies portraying gay relationships. Two out-of-work musicians, Rishi Kapoor and Paintal, who witnessed a murder, and were spotted by the villains doll up as women to avoid being chased. They get on to a train to Kashmir with other girls on a singing band, and meet Neetu Singh, Bindoo and Asrani.
Amitabh Bachchan: Amitabh Bachchan's unforgettable song "Mere angne mein, tumhara kya kaam hai..." from the 1981 Prakash Mehra film 'Lawaaris' set a trend for the drag act. The film came to be known for the song in which Amitabh donned women's clothes to croon the benefits of having a tall, thin, plump and dark wife. The song was rendered twice, first time by Alka Yagnik who earned her first Filmfare Nomination as best female playback singer, and the second time by Amitabh himself. The film also starred Amjad Khan, Zeenat Aman and Raakhee Gulzar.
Govinda: Govinda has dolled up many times in his career and 'Aunty No. 1' was one such film where he was seducing Kader Khan in a saree worn in the Maharashtrian style.
Shashi Kapoor: Shashi Kapoor is in a double role in 'Haseena Maan Jayegi' and there is a song in which he is in drag and dances courtesan style.
Shammi Kapoor: In 'Bluff Master', released in 1963, Shammi Kapoor dresses up as a woman in a song sequence. The film also starred Saira Banu, Pran, and Lalita Pawar. The film was directed by Manmohan Desai.
