    Congragulation - Lions



    Sri Lanka has been playing in the World Cup since 1975. In the first two editions, they had to qualify as they were a non-Test playing nation. From 1983, they were invited to play as they had acquired Test status by then. Sri Lanka has won the World Cup in 1996 and had made it to the last four in 2003. They revolutionized the concept of the first 15 overs in One-Day Internationals. Earlier, teams used to play these overs very cautiously but they showed the world how to take advantage of the fielding restrictions. Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana became a household name with their display of aggressive batting.

    The Sri Lankan side is on a roll lately. They played some good cricket in New Zealand and will also play a series against India in preparation for their World Cup campaign. Mahela Jayawardene will lead them at the World Cup. The selectors have selected a 15-member squad for the World Cup. Here are the squad members:

    Mahela Jayawardene

    Date of Birth: 27 May, 1977
    State/County/ Club: Sinhalese Sports Club
    Role: Right-handed batsman and right-arm medium bowler
    One-Day debut: Against Zimbabwe in 1998
    World Cup Debut: Against Zimbabwe in 1999

    Mahela Jayawardene is one of the fine batsmen in the Sri Lankan team. In his ODI career since 1998, Jayawardene has scored 6185 runs in 236 matches at an average of 31.71. The strike rate maintained by Jayawardene throughout his career is 75.41. He has made 34 fifties and eight centuries. The highest score of his career, 128 runs, was made against India in 2000. He is also an excellent fielder, who has taken 118 catches in the ODIs. As an irregular bowler, Jayawardene has taken only seven wickets, 2 wickets for 56 runs being his best bowling performance.

    Mahela Jayawardene has played at the World Cup in 1999 and 2003. In 13 World Cup matches, Jayawardene has accumulated 123 runs with the strike rate of 75.00. His highest score at the tournament is 45 runs. In field, he has taken only two catches. At the tournament, he has taken only two wickets. His best bowling figure was also made in the World Cup.

    Kumar Sangakkara

    Role: Left-handed batsman and wicketkeeper
    One-Day debut: Against Pakistan in 2000
    World Cup Debut: Against New Zealand in 2003

    Kumar Sangakkara is one of famous names in the history of Sri Lankan cricket. Sangakkara has played 189 ODIs in his career. In the matches, he has accumulated 5476 runs at an average of 36.26 with the strike rate of 74.45. In the process, he has made 36 fifties and six centuries. In 2005, Sangakkara made the highest score of his career (138 not out) against India . Sangakkara is considered to be one of the fine wicketkeepers Sri Lanka has ever had. He has 166 catches and 48 stumpings against his name at the ODIs.

    Kumar Sangakkara has appeared at only one World Cup in 2003. In ten World Cup matches, Sangakkara has scored 176 runs at an average of 25.14. The strike rate retained by him at the tournament is 73.64. The highest score made by Sangakkara at the World Cup is 39 not out. In his World Cup career, Sangakkara has taken 15 catches behind wicket and has effected two stumpings.

    Sanath Jayasuriya

    Role: Left-handed batsman and slow left-arm orthodox spinner

    Sanath Jayasuriya is one of the greatest cricketers in the world of cricket. He is not only an explosive batsman, but also an effective spinner. In his ODI career, Jayasuriya has accumulated 11538 runs in 379 matches at an average of 32.87 with 62 fifties and 23 centuries. With this achievement, he is the third highest scorer in the world. The highest score of Jayasuriya in the ODIs is 189 runs, which is the highest for Sri Lanka and the third highest of the world. He made this score against India in 2000. He is also holder of various records at both national and international level. In field, Jayasuriya has taken 111 catches in the ODIs. As a bowler, he has taken 285 wickets, 6 wickets for 29 runs being his best bowling figure. On six occasions, he has taken four wickets in an innings and on four occasions, he took five wickets.

    Sanath Jayasuriya has been playing at the World Cup since the 1992 tournament. In his World Cup career, Jayasuriya has scored 698 runs, third highest score for Sri Lanka , in 27 matches with four fifties and one century. His highest score at the tournament is 120 runs. He is also among the most successful fielders in the World Cup with 15 catches. While bowling in the tournament, Jayasuriya has taken 20 wickets with his best performance of 3 wickets for 12 runs.

    Upul Tharanga

    Date of Birth: February 2, 1985

    Role: Left-handed batsman
    One-Day debut: Against West Indies in 2005

    Upul Tharanga is a promising batsman of the Sri Lankan team. He is also a potential wicketkeeper in the Sri Lankan side. He has the efficiency of opening the batting line-up of Sri Lanka with Sanath Jayasuriya . He has played 43 matches since his ODI debut in 2005. In the matches, Tharanga has amassed 1416 runs at an average of 35.40. In the process, Tharanga has made five fifties and six centuries. Till date, the strike rate maintained by this young batsman in ODIs is 74.88. His highest score is 120 runs. He made the runs against England in 2006. He has also taken seven catches while fielding.

    Upul Tharanga has not yet played at any World Cup tournament. He has been selected in the final fifteen member squad of Sri Lanka for the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup. he is expected to perform well during the tournament.

    Tillakaratne Dilshan

    Tillakaratne Dilshan is one of the promising cricketers of the Sri Lankan team. In his ODI career, Dilshan has played 109 matches. In the matches, he has accumulated 2092 runs at an average of 29.05. In the process, Dilshan has made eight fifties and only one century. Till date, Dilshan has maintained the strike rate of 77.65 in the ODIs. His highest score at the ODIs is 117 not out. Dilshan made the runs against the Netherlands in 2006. There are also 54 catches and one stumping against his name.

    Tillakaratne Dilshan is also reckoned as a rising bowler. In his ODI career, Dilshan has taken 36 wickets at an average of 43.11. The economy rate of his bowling is 4.79. Twice he has taken four wickets in an innings. The best bowling figure of Dilshan stands at 4 wickets for 29 runs. Dilshan has not yet played at the World Cup. He is going to debut in the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup.

    Russel Arnold

    Russel Arnold is one of the well known cricketers of the Sri Lankan team. Since his ODI debut in 1997, Arnold has played 169 matches accumulating 3832 runs at an average of 35.48. The strike rate retained by Arnold in his career is 72.31. He has made 27 fifties and one century in this period. The highest score made by Arnold is 103 runs against Zimbabwe in 1999. As a fielder, he has taken 46 catches at the international level. Arnold is also an occasional bowler. He has taken 37 wickets in his ODI career with an economy rate of 4.84. The best bowling figure of Arnold is 3 wickets for 47 runs.

    Russel Arnold has played at the 2003 World Cup. In the 10 World Cup matches played by him, Arnold has scored 92 runs with his highest at the tournament, 34 not out. In field, he has taken only two catches. As a bowler, Arnold has taken 3 wickets at the World Cup. He took these wickets in an innings (3 wickets for 47 runs), which is his all-time career best.

    Chamara Silva

    Role: Right-handed batsman and legbreak bowler

    Chamara Silva is one of the promising players of the Sri Lankan team, who are expected to lead Sri Lanka in future. Silva has played 14 ODIs in his career since his debut in 1999. In the matches, he has scored 276 runs at an average of 27.60. The strike rate retained by this potential batsman is 68.65. Silva has made one fifty and one century in his career so far. The best score made by Silva is 107 not out. He achieved this score against India in 2007. Till date, in the ODIs, he has also taken three catches. Silva is also an occasional legbreak bowler.

    Chamara Silva has not appeared at any World Cup, in spite of debuting in the ODIs in 1999. Silva has been chosen in the final fifteen member Sri Lankan team for the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup. He is expected to exhibit his skills in the game during the tournament.

    Chaminda Vaas

    Role: Left-handed batsman and left-arm fast-medium bowler

    Chaminda Vaas is one of the well known Sri Lankan fast bowlers. He is considered to be one of the most effective new-ball bowlers in the history of cricket. Vaas has played 290 matches since his ODI debut in 1994. In the matches, he has accumulated 1876 runs with one fifty. The highest score of Vaas in his ODI career is 50 not out. He has also taken 56 catches while fielding. An aggressive bowler, Vaas has taken 370 wickets in his career at an average of 28.00 and an economy rate of 4.20. On nine occasions, he has taken four wickets in an innings and on four events five wickets. The best bowling figure of Vaas stands at 8 wickets for only 19 runs, which is the best innings bowling in the world. This achievement was made by him in 2001 against Zimbabwe .

    Chaminda Vaas has played at the World Cup in 1996, 1999 and 2003. He has scored 185 runs in 21 matches with his highest of 29 not out. He has also taken four catches at the tournament. Vaas is among the top wicket taker at the World Cup. He has taken 36 wickets at an average of 20.94 and the economy rate of 4.09. His best bowling performance at the World Cup is 6 wickets for 25 runs.

    Dilhara Fernando

    Role: Right-handed batsman and right-arm fast-medium bowler
    One-Day debut: Against South Africa in 2001
    World Cup Debut: Against New Zealand in 2003

    Dilhara Fernando is one of the renowned pacer in the Sri Lankan side. In his ODI career since 2001, Fernando has played 105 matches, where he has score only 138 runs. His highest score is 13 not out. Fernando is also an efficient fielder and has taken 18 catches in the ODIs. He is much more successful as a bowler. In his career, Fernando has taken 126 wickets till date. The economy rate retained by him at the ODIs is 5.30. Once he has taken four wickets in an innings. The best bowling performance of Fernando is 4 wickets for 48 runs.

    Dilhara Fernando has appeared at the World Cup on only one occasion in 2003. At the World Cup, Fernando has taken 8 wickets in 9 matches, 3 wickets for 47 runs being his best bowling figure. He has scored only 30 runs at the tournament with his highest of 13 not out. The strike rate maintained by him at the World Cup is 88.23.

    Lasith Malinga

    Date of Birth: 28 August, 1983

    Role: Right-handed batsman and right-arm fast bowler
    One-Day debut: Against United Arab Emirates in 2004

    Lasith Malinga is a rising fast bowler of Sri Lanka . He is already being considered to be the fastest bowler in the history of Sri Lankan cricket. Malinga has played 28 ODIs since his debut in 2004. In the matches, he has scored 44 runs with his career highest of 15 runs. Till now the strike rate maintained by Malinga in his career is 58.66. In field, he has taken only three catches.

    Lasith Malinga is reckoned as a bowler rather than a batsman. Till date in his career, Malinga has taken 39 wickets at an average of 26.97. The economy rate of his bowling is 4.78. The best bowling figure of Malinga is 4 wickets for 44 runs. Twice he has taken four wickets in an innings. Malinga is yet to make his first appearance at the World Cup. He has been chosen for the final World Cup squad of Sri Lanka in 2007.

    Muttiah Muralitharan

    Muttiah Muralitharan is considered to be among the greatest players in the history of Sri Lankan cricket. He is one of the most successful spinners of the world. In his ODI career, Muralitharan has scored only 488 runs in 287 matches with the strike rate of 70.62. The highest score made by him is 27 runs. Muralitharan is also an efficient fielder, who has taken 112 catches in the ODIs. One of the greatest bowlers of the world, Muralitharan is the second highest wicket taker with his bowling figure of 432 wickets in 287 matches. The average of his bowling is 23.07 and the economy rate is 3.83. Muralitharan has taken 7 wickets for 30 runs against India in 2000. With this achievement, he is the fourth highest wicket taker in an innings. Eleven times in his career, Muralitharan has taken four wickets in an innings and on eight occasions he has bagged five wickets in an innings.

    Muttiah Muralitharan has played at the World Cup in 1996, 1999 and 2003. In 21 matches, he has scored 59 runs, 16 being his highest at the tournament. In field, he has taken seven catches.     Marvan Atapattu is an opening batsman of the Sri Lankan team. He bats at the opening position. In his ODI career, Atapattu has played 268 matches, where he scored 8529 runs. The runs were scored at an average of 37.57 with the strike rate of 67.72. In the process, Atapattu has made 59 fifties and 11 centuries. His highest score is 132 not out, made against England in 1998. Atapattu is also an efficient fielder. He has taken 70 catches in the ODIs.

    Marvan Atapattu has appeared in the World Cup on two occasions in 1999 and 2003. In his World Cup career, Atapattu has scored 521 runs in 15 matches at an average of 43.41with three fifties and two centuries. The strike rate maintained by him at the tournament is 79.29.     Farveez Maharoof is a promising cricketer of Sri Lanka . In his ODI career since 2004, Maharoof has played 60 matches. In the matches, he has scored 564 runs at an average of 19.44. Till date, the strike rate maintained by this young player is 82.33. In his career, Maharoof has made only one fifty. The highest score made by him is 58 not out. In field, Maharoof has also taken 13 catches.

    Farveez Maharoof is also recognized as a potential bowler. In his ODI career, Maharoof has taken 71 wickets at an average of 26.15. The economy rate maintained by him is 4.80. Making his ODI debut in 2003, Kulasekara has played 17 matches till date. In the matches, he has scored 32 runs with his career highest of 11 runs. In field, he has also taken four catches.

    Nuwan Kulasekara has proven his competency as a pace bowler at the international level. In his ODI career till date, Kulasekara has taken 10 wickets in 17 matches with the economy rate of 4.48. The best bowling performance of this rising pacer is 2 wickets for 19 runs. Currently his bowling average stands at 55.30. Kulasekara has not yet played at the World Cup.     Malinga Bandara is considered to be among the rising spinners of Sri Lanka . He is referred to as a highly potential leg spinner or legbreak bowler. He has played 23 matches since his ODI debut in 2006. In the matches, Bandara has amassed 95 runs at an average of 11.87. His strike rate in the ODIs till date is 76.00. The highest score made by Bandara is 28 not out. While fielding, he has also taken four catches.

    Malinga Bandara is more renowned as a bowler. In his ODI career till date, Bandara has taken 26 wickets in 23 matches at an average of 31.61. The economy rate of bowling maintained by him is 4.82. Twice in his career, Bandara has taken four wickets in an innings. His best bowling figure stands at 4 wickets for 31 runs. Bandara is yet to play at the World Cup. He has been selected in the final fifteen member Sri Lankan squad for the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup.
