    A Difficult time for Pakistan

    A Difficult time for Pakistan

Pakistani displaced families go back after they tried to enter in Pakistan's troubled Swat Valley at Got Koto on Friday, June 5, 2009 in Pakistan. Hundreds of Pakistani refugees were stopped from returning to their homes in the Swat Valley on Friday, even after the army chief said the battle against the Taliban there had "decisively turned" in the military's favor.

Displaced men and children line up as they wait for their daily ration during a food distribution at the Chota Lahore refugee camp, in Swabi, northwest Pakistan, Friday June 5, 2009. Hundreds of Pakistani refugees were stopped from returning to their homes in the Swat Valley on Friday, even after the army chief said the battle against the Taliban there had "decisively turned" in the military's favor. The generally broad public support in Pakistan for the operation, however, could falter if conditions worsen for the up to 3 million displaced civilians, many of whom are impatient to go home.

SWABI, PAKISTAN -JUNE 4: Pakistani refugees wait in line for many hours to just to get bread at the Yar Hussain camp June 4, 2009 in Swabi, Pakistan. U.S. special envoy Richard Holbrooke pledged more American funds, stating that they will send $200 million of extra funding to support the refugees. According to North West Frontier Province (NWFP) authorities and the UN, at least 3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have now been registered as a result from recent fighting and ongoing military operations against the Taliban. The refugees have fled from Swat, Buner, and Lower Dir facing extremely harsh living conditions in the searing heat in over crowded camps.

A Pakistani army soldier stands guard as displaced people watch a helicopter carrying top U.S. envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke, unseen, lands at the Chota Lahore refugee camp, at Swabi, in northwest Pakistan, Thursday, June 4, 2009. Holbrooke visited Pakistani refugees who have fled fighting between their country's military and Taliban guerrillas and told them Thursday that the United States can't offer them security, but it can offer them aid.

Pakistani military spokesman Brigadier General Athar Abbas (C) briefs media representatives on a hilltop in Mingora, the main town in Pakistan's Swat valley June 3, 2009. Pakistani authorities are preparing for the return of residents to Swat's main town but decisive victory will only be won when Taliban leaders are dead, an army commander said on Wednesday.

Pakistani people block a road during a clash and gun fires between police and protesters in Karachi, Pakistan, on Friday, June 5, 2009. Demonstrators in a Karachi neighborhood have staged violent protests after going more than two weeks without water supplies in their homes.
