ISLAMABAD: Lawyers, leaders of political forces as well as members of civil society would attend the flag hoisting ceremony being held today (Sunday) at the residence of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

The ceremony is being held in context of the promise former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto Shaheed, made with the nation in her lifetime that the PPP government would ensure restoration of deposed judges of the superior courts, and she would hoist the national flag at the residence of Justice Chaudhry.

Addressing a press conference here at the National Press Club, Athar Minallah said apart from various leaders of political forces, the PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif was also extended invitation to attend the ceremony; however, he said that the PML-N chief made excuse to do so because of his case being pending in the apex court.

Minallah said that the legal fraternity and members of the civil society, who had extended maximum support during the lawyers two-year struggle for independence of judiciary, would attend the ceremony. He said that Advocate Israr Shah, who lost his feet during the lawyers struggle for the restoration of judiciary, would hoist the national flag at the residence of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Earlier, Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, former president Supreme Court Bar Association, had said that close associates of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, Naheed Khan, Safdar Abbasi and lawyers leader Imdad Awans son Shaheryar Awan will hoist the flag at the residence of Justice Chaudhry.
