Doha: Carnegie Mellon University - Qatar (CMU-Q) last night celebrated the official opening of its new building at the Education City in the presence of the Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and H H Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, chairperson of the Qatar Foundation.

His and Her Highnesses and honoured guests gathered at the Education City’s Ceremonial Court for talks, for speeches, for bagpipe music, for food – and for the great celebration of the inauguration of the building. Sheikha Mozah, along with the CMU-Q student body, CMU-Q dean Charles Thorpe and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) president Jared Cohon, cut the ceremonial ribbon onstage.

Cohon said the new building is the realisation of a dream. “When Qatar Foundation first presented Carnegie Mellon with the unique opportunity of opening a campus in Doha for higher education in business, computer science, and information systems, we all realised that this was the chance to create something extraordinary.”
“Extraordinary programmes need extraordinary facilities in which to thrive, a place that matches the special character of what goes on there. The building is an ideal setting for new generations of students from Qatar and the Middle East who come to live out an educational vision. This special building also reflects the special collaboration between the Qatar Foundation and Carnegie Mellon and the other great universities of Education City,” said Cohon, who has been the president of CMU since 1997.

The new building, which was provided to CMU-Q by Qatar Foundation, is situated on Education City’s East/West Walkway. Work on the 460,000-sq-ft facility in Education City started in August 2006. The building, which was designed by Mexican Legoretta+Legoretta Architects, revolves around a three-story atrium and walkway that sits on one of the main green spines at the Education City. It features open spaces, water features and a warm palette of colours.

“The heart of any university is the ‘gathering together’ of people for ideas and discussions. Our building does wonderful things to make those gatherings happen. But I think there are two key parts that make this building so effective in gathering people: the big open atrium and the food court. Qatar has a long history of hospitality, sharing food and drinking coffee with friends and visitors. Our building continues that practice, welcoming students, faculty and colleagues from other campuses to join us for food and conversation,” said Thorpe.

CMU-Q, as a present for Sheikha Mozah, unveiled a mural done by Douglas Cooper, professor of Architecture in the School of Architecture, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. “The mural is a story of where Qatar is right now,” said Kevin Lamb, assistant dean of CMU-Q, in an earlier tour of the campus.

“The opening of our building marks a new phase in Carnegie Mellon’s course of development. The building will witness our efforts to accomplish our vision and will observe our growth and anticipation to become significant members of the society… Under the wise direction of the Emir and the infinite support of H H Sheikha Mozah, Qatar is investing in what has become the most important asset of the nation – its citizens,” said Noor Al Jassim, senior business administration major and CMU-Q 2008 student body president.

The new building has 11 classrooms, five computer classrooms, five laboratories, five lecture halls, one library, 12 meeting rooms, four study rooms, two prayer rooms, two exercise rooms, 149 offices/workstations, two lounges, one food court and an assembly area for 400 plus people.
