    sure gal ....

pongal is a harvest festival equivalent to a thanksgiving event celebrated by Tamils across the world. Pongal in Tamil means "boiling over or spill over." The act of boiling over of milk in the clay pot is considered to denote future prosperity for the family.

today is bogi ..bogi is the eve of pongal... where we clear, clean n throw all the old unwanted stuff n prepare to celebrate the pongal next day ... its believed we must buy the new pot n cook the newly harvest rice in that pot ...n it brings lots lots of prosperity throught the year ..

the non farmers like us of course wont get any new harvest rice ..but we can always cook pongal (sweet rice) n offer to the sun god ... to thank him ..bcos without sunlight we can get any rice (food)

For those who wanted to try cooking pongal here is the recepi:

    Ingredients

    1 cup rice
    1/4 cup moong dal
    Sugar to taste
    Cashews for garnishing (5 - 10)
    2 tbsp margarine or ghee
    6 cups of milk

    StepsAssemble the ingredients.

Wash rice & dal together and drain well.
In the rice cooker, heat 1 tbsp ghee.
Add rice, dal and fry until the ghee coats the mixture.
Add the rest of ingredients, except for the cashews.
    Add milk cover & cook.
Keep testing the water level & stir frequently, as it has a tendency to stick to the bottom.
Mash rice and dal mixture once cooked.
Garnish fully mashed rice & dal mixture with cashews.

Well zara .. like ur curiosity ... happy to explain

usually the rice will be cooked outside the house ... using some tree branches to do the fire n place the pot on it ... of course there will be bricks arrange around the fire work to hold the pot .... after cooking the devotees will do offering to lord sun by kneeing down n praying towards him ... later the cooked sweet rice (pongal) will be served ... but in this modern world the custome is not really followed ... we just cook inside the house serve it at the altar at home ... n pray..

this festival is mostly observed by the farmers ... but yet we also just join in to celebrate bcos eventhough they harvest it ... we do need it to eat right?
