    World Beard and Moustache Championships

    World Beard and Moustache Championships

Every two years, the owners of the world's most elaborate facial hair come together for the World Beard and Moustache Championships. On May 23, 2009, the championships will return to the United States for the second time in their history, as the City of Anchorage, Alaska plays host to the world's bearded and moustached elite.

The championships feature competition in a variety of categories that include everything from the delicate Dali moustache to the outrageous full beard freestyle. The competitors appear before a panel of distinguished judges charged with the responsibility of awarding the coveted world titles to the best of the best.

This facial-hair celebration is open to everyone and spectators are welcome. The host for this event is the South Central Alaska Beard and Moustache Club which is committed to making the WBMC 2009 the biggest and best ever. Major sponsors include the Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau.

At the last WBMC held in Brighton, England, on September 1, 2007, there were 252 hirsute competitors who competed in seventeen separate categories. London's famous Handlebar Club pulled out all of the stops to make the event a huge success. Upstart Beard Team USA mounted a serious challenge to the always dominant Germans, taking first in five categories.

BTUSA hopes to enjoy even more success in Alaska. Bearded and moustached Americans along with their fans, friends, and families, (and anyone else, frankly) are invited to join the team.

BTUSA also recently announced the details on its group trip to Alaska, which is open to everyone. There are two options: Option A includes a seven-day cruise from Vancouver, Canada to Alaska and six days in Anchorage. Option B includes seven days in Anchorage. Click here for more.

Be sure to check out the category-by-category analysis straight from Beard Team USA.

The newly formed Australian beard team, the Australian Bushrangers is bringing its own band to Anchorage-- The Beards -- to play "songs about beards, for people with beards" at the Friday night opening party.

    Willi Chevalier
    Sigmaringen, Germany
    Sigmaringen Beard Club

With his superstyled partial beard which NPR's Robert Siegel once dubbed a "hair pretzel" Willi Chevalier practically owns the partial beard freestyle category. Indeed, Willi has won this category at all WBMC's in memory with the exception of the 2003 WBMC when he was on injured reserve following an unfortunate encounter with a power drill.

    James Hood

James Hood competed in his first WBMC in 2007 when he took second place in the Garibaldi division. James is 26 years old and studies liguistics at King's College in London. In addition to being a beardsman, he is a cartoonist (see below) and comedy writer. The British Cartoon Association recently named him young cartoonist of the year.

Jack Passion can rightfully claim to be the current world beard champion, having taken first place in the full beard natural category, the most competitive category of all, at the World Beard and Moustache Championships in Brighton, England, on September 1, 2007. Jack finished third in the same category in Berlin, Germany in 2005.
Jack is 23 years old, younger than most of the beards in his category.
He is an artist, a musician, and a beardsman.
    Franz "Schani" Mitterhauser
    Stockerau, Austria
    East Bavarian Beard Club

Schani's difficult to categorize facial hair creation has won him numerous accolades at international beard and moustache contests. Here is a sampling of his accomplishments:

WBMC 2007, Second Place, Sideburns Freestyle
Beard Olympics 2005, Leogang, Austria, Third Place
WBMC 2005, Fifth Place, Partial Beard Freestyle
Beard Olympics 2004, Attimis, Italy, First Place
International German Championships 2004, First Place, Chin and Cheek Beard Freestyle
WBMC 2003, Second Place, Imperial Moustache
International German Championships 2003, First Place
Superbeard 2002, Carvico, Italy, First Place
    European Championships 2002, First Place
WBMC 2001, Second Place, Imperial Cheek Beard

Schani and his wife Brigitta operate the Knusperhaeuschen, a restaurant and pub in Stockerau, not far from Vienna, Austria. Stop in anytime to visit and enjoy a glass of Austrian wine.

    Elmar Weisser
    Brigachtal, Germany
    Swabian Beard Club

Elmar stole the show at the WBMC 2005 when his tribute to the host city Berlin -- his beard styled to depict the world famous Brandenburg Gate -- earned him the world championship title in the full beard freestyle category.

In 2007 he repeated his championship performance, this time with his beard in the form of London's Tower Bridge.

What will Elmar's beard depict in Alaska? Denali? A polar bear? The Northern Lights? Stay tuned.
