What is WhatsApp and how does it work?

WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. WhatsApp Messenger is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia and yes, those phones can all message each other! Because WhatsApp Messenger uses the same internet data plan that you use for email and web browsing, there is no cost to message and stay in touch with your friends.
In addition to basic messaging WhatsApp users can create groups, send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages.

The first thing you need to know is that WhatsApp has no adverts and it is now entirely free. The app is available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Windows devices.
Once installed, you'll be asked to enter your mobile phone number. WhatsApp needs your actual number because it routes files and messages between you and your contacts similar to how an SMS system would.

WhatsApp has a menu bar that runs along the bottom of all the screens within the app. It has the following five tabs: Favourites, Recents, Contacts, Chats, and Settings. Tap on any tab in order to access a new screen and its related features and settings.

The Favourites screen should pre-load any of your phone contacts who have installed WhatsApp, but you can tap the "+" symbol in the upper right-hand corner to add more contacts. Alternatively, you can tap "Edit" in the left corner to begin deleting contacts from Favourites.

The Recents tab displays all your placed and missed WhatsApp calls, as well as allow you to clear them. The next tab on the menu bar is for Contacts, and it's where you should go to browse through your phone contacts and maybe invite them to join WhatsApp.

The fourth tab is for Chats. This is a running log of all your active messages. Tap the draft symbol in the upper right-hand corner to start a new chat with a single friend, or you can tap "New Group" to start a group chat with up to 100 people at once. Every group has one or more admins.

Google Drive Backup: Back up your chats and media to Google Drive, so if you lose your phone or switch or upgrade to a new Android phone, you can easily restore your chats and media. Set up backups in Settings > Chats and Calls > Chat backup.

    1) Password Protect Your Whatsapp

A very less number of people actually know about this. There isn’t any inbuilt feature in the app for protecting Whatsapp using password but we can do this using a third party app called ChatLock+. It is an app which helps in password protecting your Whatsapp. You can download this app from play store. Click Here for the direct link.

    2) Send PDF, ZIP and APK Files through Whatsapp

Using Whatsapp you can only send audio and video files. But in case you needed to send files like PDF, ZIP and APK you can use this app called Whats Packed 2 Ads which is developed by Yash Verma. This is an app through which you can send files of different formats using Whatsapp. You have to make sure that both the sender and the receiver have this app installed. This app converts other file formats to audio files and sends. On the receivers side, if they have the app installed then he/she will get a notification and then he/she can directly get it converted into the format sent by the sender, once he/she clicks the notification.

    3) Hide Whatsapp Media from Appearing in Your Gallery

When you receive media files like audio and video files from friends in Whatsapp, then, it automatically shows all the media in your Galley. So, sometimes you might want to hide your Whatsapp media from appearing in your gallery. To do this, you have to follow a few steps.

    Go to File Manager>>Whatsapp>>Whatsapp Images
Here you have to create file with an extension of .nomedia
You can do this by Clicking on New >> Choosing File >> Typing .nomedia there and pressing done.

After you do this, all the Whatsapp media including Images and Videos will be removed from the Gallery. In case you want to get it back, you can simply delete this file and then everything will revert back to normal.

    4) Disable Auto Media Download

A drawback of Whatsapp is that if you receive media files from your friends, then it automatically downloads all the files to your SD card which sometimes is costly if you don’t have a data plan. To avoid this you have follow below steps.

Go to Settings >> Chat Settings >> Media Auto Download. Here you will these options.

Just select No media in all of the option and you’re done.

    5) Recover Deleted Conversations

If you’ve mistakenly deleted your WhatsApp conversations, then there is a way to get it back. Generally, WhatsApp stores all the conversation history in your SD card. So, by default when you uninstall the app, the conversation history will not be deleted from your SD Card. To get your conversation back, you have to just uninstall this app. When you re-install it back, you will get an option whether you want to restore the message history or continue without restoring. You have to click on Restore as shown in the image below that’s it; your conversations will be restored back.
