Sujala Dhara, “Toilet to Tap” at the Waste Water Treatment Plant

Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated the pilot project Sujala Dhara, “Toilet to Tap- Transforming Lives through Technology” at the Waste Water Treatment Plant yesterday.

The Delhi Jal Board has partnered with SANA to install a unique and cutting edge project named "Sujala Dhara-Toilet to Tap- Transforming Lives through Technology" is an extremely innovative and futuristic project for meeting the water requirement of the Delhi in a sustainable manner.

The current capacity of the plant is 25 million litres of water per year. The plant has a number of advantages such as no sludge generation, low maintenance cost, low power consumption and high recovery of water. This project is an example of how potable water can be produced from waste water flows and used for all domestic purposes, including drinking.

Speaking on the occasion, Arvind Kejriwal congratulated DJB for setting up the system with SANA and said, "Delhi does not have its own dedicated water body that is why it is imperative to be able to store and utilize the monsoon flows of the river Yamuna. Since 50% of Delhi does not have sewerage systems and only 81% of households has piped water supply, the Government requires over 20,000 crores for putting into place sewerage systems based on the conventional Sewerage Treatment Model. Instead, the Government proposes to set up decentralized plants in Delhi which will lead to all of Delhi being sewered and provide water in every tap. This can be met within the same amount as paid for the development charges".

Delhi Jal Board is hopeful that promoting this new technology will lead to better management of water demand in the city and reduce dependability on additional raw water resources. The Board is working on a war footing to extend the water and waste water services to all unauthorized colonies in order to make piped supply and waste water services available to each household in Delhi.
