It took very little time for Sridevi, the youngest daughter of star-couple Vijayakumar and Manjula to come under the spotlight.
She made her debut in tinseldom as the bubbly child artiste in Rikshamama (as Sathyaraj and Khusbhoo's daughter) and her innings as a heroine started with the much-delayed Kaadhal Virus.
Priyamaana Thozhi and Thithikudhey, which released earlier, proved her mettle as an actress. "I have been passionate about cinema from my childhood. So, I immediately agreed when Vasu uncle (director of Rikshamama) offered me the role. But, it took some time to convince my parents," says Sridevi.
"I eat, sleep and breathe movies. Though I didn't understand the seriousness of films when I made my debut, I felt on top of the world," she adds.
With Kanchan Ganga in Kannada with Shivraj Kumar to hit the screens on Deepavali day and Devadhayai Kandein with Dhanush slated for a December release, Sridevi is looking forward to making her mark in movies. "I am choosy about films and am not in a hurry. I don't want to be a glamour doll. I want roles which provide me the scope to perform," says the actress, who has also acted in Telugu movies such as Eashwar (co-starring Prabhas) and Ninne Istapaddanu with Tarun.
Besides her parents, Sridevi draws inspiration from actresses such as Kajol, the `original' Sridevi and Simran. "I think Simran is the best artiste in recent times. She is an all-rounder, doing roles which call for performance as well as glamour. I would love to emulate her."
Sridevi's role in Priyamaana Thozhi (directed by Vikraman), won her praise from various quarters. "It was my very second movie and I got to play a meaty role. All credit should go to director Vikraman and the entire cast, including Madhavan and Jyothika. It helped establish me as an actress."
How does she view the competition in the Tamil film industry? "It is healthy. In fact, I always hang out with Trisha, Sangeetha, Maheswari, Rambha, Jyothika and Meena. All of us are good friends."
What counts here is the ability to perform, the confidence and will power to make it to the top, she adds.
As for the advantage of being a star daughter, she says: "It might get one a good opening, but the level of expectation is high. My parents have done more than 400 films each and people expect the same level of performance from me, when I am only a couple of films old."
Sridevi says her parents are her best critics. "They point out my mistakes and help me correct them, but leave me on my own otherwise. I have learnt dedication and sincerity from them. I want to earn a name for myself in the industry and make them feel proud."
