Mount Etna erupts, spewing molten lava into the night sky. The activity was concentrated in two mouths, the most southern of which produced "strombolian" explosions - lava bombs, flaming cinders, and rocks shooting at altitudes of tens to hundreds of meters into the air. Lava also spattered from "hornitos" - small openings from which flaming hot liquid oozes and sprays.
