The Flower Festival, held in the spring when the flowers are in their prime, has been for many years one of the island's main attractions for tourists and for the same residents. This charming festival, with parades and fleets across the streets of Funchal, exhibits and perfumes the air with multiple species of flowers native to the island, invading the center of the city with a fairy tale atmosphere. In the edition of each year, each group presents their dresses and a dance company with a new choreography. During recent years it has introduced an important novelty in this festival. In the 'Largo do Colégio' (Colégio Square) you will find the famous "Wall of Hope", a wall where children place their own flowers in order to build a giant flower which symbolizes the hope for a better world peaceful. This event also features activities such as making flower carpets in the streets, handing out awards for best decorated showcase, performances of traditional music groups, a flower exhibition in the 'Athenaeum Commercial' concert classical music and a large number of variety shows.
