    Nothing compares to you `Mommy`!

ďGod could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers,Ē says a Jewish proverb. There is no greater marvel in the world than the patience and goodness of a mother. It`s her love that makes us strong, her care that prepares us to face the world, her strength that helps us overcome all the trying times of life. Yet, what do we give back to her? Itís Motherís Day again, a privilege time to say `thank you` with loving gifts for dearest mommy Ė a friend, a mentor and a great inspiration.

    You`re the best Mom

There is simply no way we can ever really thank mother for all she has done for us. She is the one to wake up early in the morning, to make our nicest tiffin and endure all our tantrums. For everything that we need we call upon her. To protect us from all perceivable dangers, we want her around. To take us out, we cling to her arms. To kiss away our wounds, we run to her. And for a warm hug and love, we look for her. She is the focal point of our lives, the greatest human being in the world or should we say divinity on earth. Thanks to the hard work of the pioneering women, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis that the day came into existence. The Resolution for having a dedicated Motherís Day was signed by US President Woodrow Wilson on May 8, 1914. Since then people across the world have been celebrating Motherís Day with joy and devotion.

"I hope that someone, sometime will found a memorial mothers day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders to humanity in every field of life. She is entitled to it."

This is the very line that inspired Ms Anna Jarvis, the Founder of Motherís Day to call for an international celebration of the day. Long back, when she was 12-year old, Anna remembered her mother, Mrs Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis express the wish in a class prayer. Anna never forgot this wish, and at her motherís graveside service, she recalled the lines and said, ďBy the grace of God, you shall have Motherís Day.Ē Though never a mother herself, Anna Jarvis is recognized as the Mother of Motherís Day.

    Tell her u `love her`

May second Sunday is one of the most sentimental Sundays in the Christian calendar, as Motherís Day is being observed on this day. Churches are flooded with carnations, which are meant to be presented to the mothers. Others present at the mass are asked to wear flowers. The tradition of gifting flowers began with Miss Anna Jarvis, as white carnations were a favourite of her mother. The reason for selecting the flower has been explained by Miss Anna Jarvis -

"The white carnation is preferred because it may be thought to typify some of the virtues of motherhood; ... whiteness stands for purity; its lasting qualities, faithfulness; its fragrance, love; its wide field of growth, charity; its form, beauty..."

Botanical name of the flower is Dianthus Caryophyllus. Carnations are also considered to be divine flowers. They are generally white, pink, red or reddish pink in colour, though carnations of other colours can also be found. Today carnations are worn and gifted worldwide on Mothers Day and have become symbolic of purity, strength and endurance of motherhood. As a custom, red carnations are worn to honour living mothers and white carnations for the deceased mothers.

Motherís Day is the perfect day to tell her that we love her, through cards, flowers, gifts and myriad ways. It is a day to think about her likes and dislikes and celebrate accordingly, and to pamper her a little on this special day of hers just as she pampers us all the year round. Mothers are the one on whom we put all the blame for our failures. Isn`t it tough to imagine how she must have borne our tempers, when we were teenagers? And how hard we must have made her life by behaving so rude and difficult. So, it is also the right time to apologize for all the troubles that we gave our moms, without even realizing at most times how troublesome we must have been to her.

Her blessings are always with us

Nothing could be worse then the pain of losing a mother, but it doesnít have to be a tearful day. Instead, this day could bring the memories of the departed mother in ways that bring happiness and joy to us as well as others who cared for her. Though she could not be by our side guiding us as she used to, she still watches over her little ones from Heaven above.

Her soul never stops protecting us, she rejoices and cries with us silently in times of joys and sorrows. So, whether this is the first Mother`s Day after she passed away, or she has been gone many years back, yet we can celebrate her life by gathering together all those who loved her. We can`t give her gifts, but we can honour her by remembering the life she led, the things she loved, and the lessons about life that she taught us, in addition to holding a Motherís Day party by preparing all her favorite dishes. It is the best time to visit a mother`s grave or the location where her ashes were scattered. Planting or buying a special flower that she loved would revive those beautiful memories of her.

`Youth fades; love droops, the leaves of friendship fall; A mother`s secret hope outlives them all`---Oliver Wendell Holmes, physician and poet
