At Sarkar Raj launch, Ram Gopal gets candid, Bachchans join from Mimai

If the first look of Sarkar Raj reminds you of a Bachchan family album, we won't blame you. And this Bachchan bonding was visible throughout the promo launch of the film as well. Coinciding with Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya’s first wedding anniversary the media was in for a double treat at the JW Marriott, Mumbai on April 20. But when addressed as the first family of Bollywood, Big B was quick to add that they were not in the US Parliament and saw themselves just as actors.

The event started with a press conference to unveil the first teaser of Sarkar Raj. Director Ram Gopal Varma called his film "another situation in the lives of the Nagre family". He said unlike most sequels this film wasn't a continuation of the first part, bearing no relation to Godfather (Sarkar was a self confessed tribute by Varma to Coppola's gangster classic). "Sarkar Raj is a far more complex and lavish film with no reference points. It's an original script," Varma added.

verma apologised for making Aag and Nishabd

Amitabh Bachchan said though some his projects with Varma had missed the bus, those films were extremely challenging for him as an actor. The promo opens with a familiar scene of Sarkar waving his hand to the crowds from his balcony. Another hand is visible next to him as he introduces his successor Shankar (Abhishek Bachchan). Enter Aishwarya Rai, a powerful industrialist who wants to set up a power plant in rural Maharashtra. While she is looking at it purely as a business opportunity, Abhishek is convinced the project will help in the progress of the state. Sarkar however is apprehensive of the proposal.

As Abhishek and Aishwarya set out to mobilise support for their power plant they are caught in ugly state politics that pits father against son. The look and feel of the film is similar to the first one, but this time there are many more explosions and mob riots. The theme track Govinda returns in a remixed version. While some dialogues have been retained from the prequel there are many more applause worthy lines from Bachchan Sr. For example: "Jaan lena jurm hai, sahi waqt pe jaan lena rajneeti hai". The tag line of the film goes: 'Power cannot be given, it has to be taken'. None of the scenes suggest a romantic track between Abhi-Ash while Tanisha returns as Abhishek's wife.

And then came the moment everyone was waiting for. Abhishek and Aishwarya interacted with the media through a live video conference from Miami. The couple was all smiles as the Bachchans indulged in an extended session of "Love you Ma… Love you Pa… Bless you Abhishek and Aishwarya". Junior B had worn a black jacket while Ash looked radiant in a purple halter dress. The couple was in a studio in downtown Miami. Taking a dig at RGV's cold war with Karan Johar, Abhishek said whether Varma agrees or not, even Sarkar Raj was "all about loving your family".

Abhishek was at his wittiest best as he said the only change in one year was that this time they were celebrating with the media. He said Ash was perfect but he had a long way to go before he could be a perfect husband. He also kept asking Ramu to smile for a change. In his trademark humorous style, Big B pulled the couple's leg. He kept reminding them to behave as they were on camera and began his message to them by asking whether they were fresh after a "good night's sleep".

Abhishek said his gift to Ash was a secret and told the media that the film will only prove that all other actors have a long way to go before even thinking of competing with Big B. When asked about missing the IPL frenzy, he said he had little idea about the event. All this while, mommy dearest Jaya Bachchan was continuously sobbing away. But when Ramu made bit of a faux pas by saying Abhishek has had it easier than Big B, Jaya was on the offensive till Ramu had to change the topic.

Varma however said that Abhishek was the better actor and people would get a glimpse of this when they see the two Bachchans in the multiple close ups through the film. Big B said he didn't believe in comparisons and always points out faults in Abhishek and Ash's performances when they are in private. Ash revealed she was doing Robot and that the couple had also said yes to Mani Ratnam for his next. She even hinted at another project with Varma after Sarkar Raj. But both Ash and Amitabh dodged questions about their roles in the film being inspired by real life characters.

Bachchan said the Raj in the title had no relation to any other Raj. It only meant 'kingdom' and since he doesn't smile in the film it means "Raj never brings happiness". Ramu got a bit emotional when Bachchan said Sarkar Raj would prove that a good director can never be kept down for long. Varma said it was a kinder way of saying "Ramu has been through hell, now spare the guy". Big B admitted working with family was tougher. He said the biggest challenge was in switching between the reel and real life roles.

Varma gave the closing speech as he apologised for making Aag and Nishabd. He said, "I behaved like a fan and played around with Mr Bachchan's image the way I wanted to, without keeping in mind the sentiments of his fans". He said it was purely out of mutual respect that Bachchan agreed to do the above two films. Sarkar Raj releases on June 06, 2008.
