The maintenance of physical as well as mental and emotional health depends on the balance of Chi. Furthermore; the development of Chi is closely connected with spiritual development. The understanding of Chi is critical in helping people to prevent and reverse certain diseases, such as cancer. Chiu-Nan Lai discusses the experience of Chinese cancer patients with Chi Gong and some of the scientific explanations. Chiu-Nan Lai also discusses Chi Gong in the context of esoteric Buddhist teachings on the nature of mind and body.

Chiu-Nan Lai currently is the co director of a health training center near Santa Cruz: Land of Medicine Buddha, a center for healing and developing a good heart. Since her introduction to Chi Gong in 1981, Chiu-Nan Lai has been both a student and teacher of Chi Gong in China, Taiwan, U.S., India, Nepal, France and Germany. During this period she introduced Chi Gong to spiritual teachers such as His Holiness the Dalai Lama and several high Lamas in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. She holds a doctorate in chemistry from M.I.T. For 10 years she was engaged in cancer research at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
