A BLACK CAPS veteran yet still some way off his 30th birthday, Daniel Vettori is one of the BLACKCAPS most recognisable talents in world cricket.
Appointed captain of the Test and ODI teams in September 2007, his first assignment was to lead the squad into the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa.
A left-arm bowler with a world-class economy rate, he is one of only two New Zealanders - alongside Chris Cairns - to have taken 200 wickets in both Test and ODI cricket.
His batting has improved for him to be recognised a true all-rounder, and again, only Cairns and Richard Hadlee can also claim a 200 wicket/ 2000 run Test double among their compatriots.
His maiden Test century of 137 against on his home ground at Westpac Park in Hamilton in 2003/04 showed these qualities and proved that he is a more than handy batsman coming in down the order.
He followed that with his nation's quickest ever Test century, his 127 against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2005 coming off only 98 deliveries, reaching his 100 in 82 balls.
The knock marked his development into a true, world-class all-rounder, a fact underlined by his continued presence in the top echelon of the ICC' player rankings.
He became the BLACKCAPS’ youngest-ever Test cricketer, selected to play at Wellington in February 1997, when aged 18 years 10 days and captained the BLACKCAPS in Bangladesh and skippered them in for the first time in New Zealand against Australia in December 2005.
His talents led him to the New Zealand Cricket Almanack Player of the Year in 2000, 2005 and National Bank Player of the Year for 2006.
