A couple of years back, JoSH had made their debut on the non-film Indian music scene with 'Kabhi.' Prior to that, the powerful duo had shot to fame with their groundbreaking mix of Nelly Furtado’s super hit single, 'Powerless.' In mid-2006, they worked with Nelly again, adding their special touch to a remix of Maneater. In the meanwhile, JoSH has carved their place among mainstream artists, successfully collaborating with other major artists including Sukhbir, Apache Indian, Nelly Furtado and Rishi Rich. And now they are back with a bang, literally, as they come up with their second album 'Mausam.'
1) Mahi Ve (Original and remix by RDB)
Get on to the groove and be ready for a ride of your life as JoSH takes you through an enthralling journey with 'Mahi Ve' that has a mix of bhangra, pop and sufi elements. A rocking song that would go down as one of the Top-10 non-film songs of the year so far, 'Mahi Ve' is absolutely smashing in the way it has been paced, engineered, arranged and presented. The vocals are full of life and so spirited that you just want to join the duo and sway to the tunes as the team sings away to glory. A superb beginning to an album that suddenly becomes quite promising right away. RDB's remix version of 'Mahi Ve' has a rock concert feel to it and takes a thumping route, pun intended. A mix of a different kind, it is for the club and is a DJ's delight. Watch out for the way the pace of the song continues to change at different junctures.
2) Mausam
Sound of an adjustment of a radio signal marks the beginning of 'Mausam' and for some strange reason, it has a female sound coming for just about a few seconds before the lively sound of guitar takes over. The mood stays sombre even when JoSH comes into picture and takes a softer approach towards the whole song. A number about beautiful weather, it makes your heart go weak and look forward to being with the one closest to you. It has some simple lyrics that are its mainstay. A melodious poetic number that takes a completely different route than the one preceding it, it brings on some good variety.
3) Rock Your World (Original and remix by Rishi Rich)
A winner number all the way, 'Rock Your World' is a mix of English and Punjabi lyrics that takes around a minute to set its pace and once it is there, there is just no looking back, especially when the Punjabi portion of the song arrives. There is a rap'n'reggae bit in the song too, but what remains prominent throughout are the English lyrics with bhangra beats coming at just the right moment to make the song hold true to its lyrics. Go for it, even as Rishi Rich's remix version only adds on to the fun.
4) Teri Aankhon (Original and Groove Guru Goa mix)
The album follows an alternate shift in approach once again. After a pacy 'Rock Your World' comes 'Teri Aankhon' which is a soft love song that deserves to be sung in those cool 'n' nice moments of sheer bliss. The music stays to be melodious with sounds of nature in the background only helping its cause. A 'Groove Guru Goa' mix comes at the very end of the album but to be honest, it is hardly any different from the original. One doesn't mind it much though, since the original itself is a pleasant hear nonetheless!
5) Jaanon (Original and Dubai remix)
The trend of alternate moods continues with 'Jaanon' which is a very Sukhbir kind of song! A compliment indeed, since the pacy feel of the song only helps in making 'Jaanon' an exciting number to listen. There is a slight Pakistani-pop feel to the way the song has been rendered and composed and that only helps the peppy feel of the album to grow. One expects a lot from the 'Dubai remix' version since the song has a lot of potential for a remix to be woven around it. Thankfully, the expectations are met, as the remix version simply rocks with only the theme music taking the song through its first two minutes, only to be complimented by some brilliant follow through till the end. Set as a lounge fusion mix, this one keeps the adrenaline pumping. A smashing remix that deserves to be heard at top volume.
6) Nasha Pyar Da (Original and Mad'MoiZele Giraf remix)
The fun continues as the first ever bhangra-pop number in the album comes in the form of 'Nasha Pyar Da.' This is a kind of track that is expected to be played in all discs, clubs, pubs and dance floors and rest is assured that it would be a superb success there. With a great rhythm, spirited rendition and some superb pace, 'Nasha Pyar Da' is indeed intoxicating. Ditto for the 'Mad'MoiZele Giraf remix' which adds on a tribal touch to it.
7) Munn Say Pucho
A feel good number makes an appearance with the arrival of 'Munn Say Pucho.' The song has a sweet 'n' saccharine appeal to it though the pop feel is prevalent throughout. This is a kind of number that one associates with Palash Sen's band 'Euphoria.'
Ajnabi and Aaj Ka Din
The sound of guitar marks the opening of 'Ajnabi' that truly belongs to the Pakistani-pop genre. An ok number, especially due to the fact that in the last couple of months or so, there has anyway been an overdose of Pakistani albums and hence none expected to hear something on the same lines here. As a standalone, the song is a fine effort but in the album, 'Ajnabi' does appear to be a misfit. A love song brings the album to an end as there is mush and romance all around in the form of 'Aaj Ka Din'.
'Mausam' is a pretty decent album with a number of songs making their presence felt, especially those where JoSH go in a holds-no-bar mode and rock the show. There are a few soft songs in the album but the ones that impress most are the full on pace and beats numbers like 'Maahi Ve,' 'Rock Your World,''Jaanon' and 'Nasha Pyar De!'
