British actor Hugh Grant and his girlfriend Jemima Khan have split up after almost three years together.

Grant's publicist said the split was amicable and the decision to part had been taken in the last few days.

Grant, 46, and Khan, the 33-year-old daughter of Sir James Goldsmith, began dating after the end of her marriage to former Pakistani cricketer Imran Khan.

Music and Lyrics, Grant's latest film, which also stars Drew Barrymore, topped the UK box office chart this week.

The split comes days after Grant and Khan, who has two children, attended US and UK premieres of the movie.

A spokesman for the couple said: "It is an entirely amicable split but both regard it as a private matter and will not be making any further statements."

Grant, who shot to fame in romantic comedies including Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill, has never married.

He previously had a long-standing relationship with actress and model Elizabeth Hurley.

Hugh and Jemima 'as close as ever'

Nearly all celebrity break-ups are described as 'amicable' - even when both parties privately admit they could cheerfully throttle each other.

But judging from these pictures, Hugh Grant and Jemima Khan might just be making it work.

The couple, who split up in February, had a friendly dinner in the West End before returning to the 46-year-old actor's townhouse.

Nearly two hours later, the 33-year-old heiress emerged alone looking unusually cheerful.

The reunion was so successful that the pair met again the next day - this time at Jemima's house. Friends say that although the romance is not back on, they are 'as close as ever'.

While no official reason was given for the split, it was speculated that Jemima became exasperated-with Grant's reluctance to marry.
A source said: "There is absolutely no acrimony between Hugh and Jemima.

"There was no major falling-out when they split and definitely no third party involved which means there's absolutely no reason why they can't be friends.

"They planned this reconciliation meal a couple of weeks ago. It was a chance for a catch-up and a giggle with no strings attached."
