Sri Lanka Army (SLA) fired artillery shells killing at least 47 civilians, patients and the Administrative Officer K. The attack came while around 2,000 wounded patients within the last 3 days were waiting for the ICRC to be transported in the ship. More than 2,600 civilians were killed within the past 3 days in Sri Lankan attacks in Vanni. Medical Superintendent Dr. Shanmugarajah and his family narrowly escaped from the attack. ICRC ship to transport 500 of around 2,000 civilians was also scheduled to reach Mu'l'li-vaaykkaal Tuesday.

Sri Lankan Army motar shell hit the only functioning hospital in Mullivaikkal inside safe zone on Tuesday morning around 7:30, killing 47 patients, care takers and hospital staff. More than 56 others were injured in the attack. The hospital only a week ago sifted to the new location after being attacked twice within a day killing 63 civilians.

In the morning attack, a mortar shell has landed in the admissions ward that has been functioning in a temporary shed, killing the patients and care takers in the ward. The ward was overcrowded with many patients injured in the weekend attack. The Medical Officer yesterdy described it as overwhelming and said over thousand seriously injured civilians are waiting for ICRC ship to transport them to other hospitals for further treatment.

The Administrative Officer of the hospital K. Tharmakulasingam was among those killed and another 56 or more civilians were wounded, hospital sources said. Medical Superintendent Dr. Shanmugarajah narrowly escaped from the attack. Shelling was still continuing and patients and other civilians were fleeing in all directions for safety. This is the fouth time the hospital was attacked after shifting to Mullivaikkal. According to, Dr Thurairaja Varatharajah, who was at the hospital at that time, a single mortar shell has hit the hospital. He expects the death toll to rise because many of the injured had bad head and stomach wounds, he added.
