Two weeks after the Central City Bank was robbed, Muggs, Looey, Fingers, and The Hermit were picked up on suspicion of the crime.

During the questioning, Detective I M Cagey managed to get a statement three sentences long from each man.

With the help of a lie detector, Detective Cagey found that each man told only one lie.

So, two sentences in each man's statement contained the truth, and one contained a lie.

(Obviously, if a man indicates that he's innocent in two different sentences, he must be.)

Knowing these facts, Detective Cagey was able to deduce who the guilty person was.

Muggs:
I Never robbed anyone.
I was in New York that day.
I did not rob the Central City Bank.

Looey:
I was with Muggs in New York.
I've never been to Central City Bank before.
I am innocent.

Fingers:
Muggs said i did it.
Yes, I was in town all that day.
I was never in Central City Bank, though.

The Hermit:
Looey didn't do it.
Muggs wasn't really in New york that day.
I went to New York that day, so i couldn't have done it.

Here Goes The Answer:

Since Muggs stated twice that he did not do it.

He must be innocent.

His false statement is that he was in New York.

Looey is also innocent because his false statment is that he was in New York with Muggs.

Muggs did not say that Fingers did it.

So Fingers other statement must be true, making Fingers not guilty also.

The Hermit was correct when he said looey didn't do it.

He was also correct when he said Muggs wasn't in New York.

Therfore, his third statement must be false, making him the guilty person, although he may have gone to New York - right after robbing the bank.
