Notepad++ is a free source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages. Running in the MS Windows environment, its use is governed by GPL License. Based on the powerful editing component Scintilla, Notepad++ is written in C++ and uses pure Win32 API and STL which ensures a higher execution speed and smaller program size. By optimizing as many routines as possible without losing user friendliness, Notepad++ is trying to reduce the world carbon dioxide emissions. When using less CPU power, the PC can throttle down and reduce power consumption, resulting in a greener environment.

Notepad++ is very simple and easy to use. Some plugins and converters are already installed.

Work with multiple tabs; now you don't need to open different notepads for mutliple tasks, just make another tab in Notepad++.

Macro recording allows you to record you data (text input) and then you can play and repeat text as much as want.

Working in different languages is much easier with Notepad++, just select your required language or define your own language.

A lot of different documents types are supported in Notepad++, you can import and save your data in any format.

Preferences can easily be accessed from "Settings" menu.

I personally prefer a similar program, gedit, for programming. You can find it here (https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Gedit#Download).
