It is heartbreaking and unfortunate that the 14 years old Malala was shot by an ignorant soul for upholding her human and Islamic values. As I write this small tribute to her courage, she is struggling for her life with bullets in her head and neck. Through her courage and preservation as demonstrated in the remote valley of Pakistan’s frontier land, she has undisputedly shown the light to the world of ignorance across the globe. The most beloved Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), not only prescribed, all men to protect, respect and love mankind but the women folks in particular. Islam goes further to instruct protection of all living creatures including civilians, plants and trees even in the time of war. Great Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) loved his daughter; Fatima so much that whenever she walked towards him, he would get up out of love and affection for her. Through his teachings and actions he prohibited the Arab tradition which called for burying alive of new born females. The Prophet lived by setting examples of patience, tolerance, forgiveness and infinite kindness which remains unmatched even today. It is obvious that the Pakistani Muslim extremist who fired the bullets with intent to murder Malala had no understanding of his own self-proclaimed religion and its teachings. 5:32-Quran“For killing innocent; it would be as if he slew the whole people, and if anyone saved a life as it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them our Messengers with clear signs, yet, even after that many of them continued to commit excesses in the land” 2:170 -Quran“When it is said to them: Follow what Allah has revealed, they say: Nay! We shall follow the ways of our fathers; what even though their fathers were void of wisdom and guidance?” 2:171 -Quran“The parable of those who reject faith is as if one were to shout like a goat heard, to things that listen to nothing; but calls and cries; Deaf, dumb, and blind they are void of wisdom” Many self-proclaimed Muslims do not follow the teachings of the Prophet and of the Quran because they are illiterate and the Clergy who leads them in prayer is also guilty of being illiterate, whereas the first instruction to the followers was “to read in the name of thy Lord” The Quran makes it incumbent on every Muslim man and women to maximize education. It has been made clear by the Quran that the education which is demanded of Muslims is not limited to religious education. Quran is a gift to mankind as a road map to success in this life and in the life after. The root of the problem is the Clergy who knows how to read and then teach the Quran in Arabic language for memorization but does not know how to translate the Quran in local languages to facilitate its teachings. The result is that we have millions of self-proclaimed Muslims who have no understanding of what the Quran speaks of and of the teachings of the Prophet which he demonstrated through action during his life time. Thus reading of the Quran in Arabic language has become a respectful ritual without the actual intended benefits. It is a great loss to mankind which remains ignorant and has made no effort to read and understand the road-map of life prescribed in the Quran. The so-called followers continue to practice not what Quran intended to teach them but the traditions of their illiterate and ignorant forefathers just like the Arabs of dark ages before the coming of the Prophet who was sent by the Almighty God to enlighten them. To this day, they remain illiterate, dumb and deaf - A punishment prescribed in the Quran for those who do not obey the prophet and the Book. At 14 years of age, Malala was doing her best in terms of following the teachings of the Quran and of the Prophet because she could read and understand. She was performing as a ray of light in the dark room of ignorance with the mission to help others with learning, understanding and implementation of the teachings of the great Prophet and that of the Quran: Patience- tolerance- forgiveness, perseverance and kindness through pursuit of maximizing education which has been made incumbent on all Muslim men and women. Let us honor Malala with utmost respect for her mission which was to show and demonstrate the operationalization and application of Quran in our lives for our own betterment. She is in our prayers and God is watching over her.
